商品簡介
Brill's New Pauly is the English edition of Der Neue Pauly published by Verlag J.B. Metzler since 1996. The ambitious, authoritative project will comprise 20 volumes (of which this is the fifteenth). It is interdisciplinary and contemporary in its approach. This volume concludes the part of the set that's devoted to Greco-Roman antiquity. The discussion extends beyond the Greco-Roman world to include concurrent civilizations, including Egypt and the Ancient Near East and reaching into the early Middle Ages. The entry on veterinary medicine, for example, describes remedies in Akkadian and Ugaritic before moving to Greek and Roman texts and concluding with the reception of these texts in the Middle Ages. Cancik (Latin, U. of Tubingen, Germany) and Schneider (ancient history, U. of Kassel, Germany) head the editorial team; Salazar (U. of Cambridge, the U.K.) took charge of editing the English edition, for which bibliographic references have been updated. Many of the entries are of significant artists, writers, politicians, philosophers, and military leaders. Other entries are on subjects, such as those on tumulus, vase painting, veterans, wisdom, and wood. Many drawings, ground plans, maps, and other illustrations are included. Each entry is signed and includes cross-references and bibliography. Seventy-five pages of addenda to the previous volumes appear, with entries topics that include agon, consumption of alcohol, and armament. Not indexed.
