Reutzel (early childhood education, Utah State U.) offers a 25-chapter handbook for educators, advanced undergraduate and graduate education students, administrators, researchers, professional development providers, academic coaches, and teacher educators on research-based practice in early childhood education. Education, psychology, pediatrics, communication disorders, child development, and other specialists from the US discuss effective leadership for at-risk children; professional development for early childhood teachers and how to put this knowledge into practice; initial teacher preparation; engaging parents, caregivers, and the community; and advocating for the educational, economic, social, and physical needs of young children. The second half covers the design and management of learning environments, the role of play, differentiation, teaching English learners, response to intervention, integrating digital pedagogies, and motivation and engagement, while the third addresses standards, curriculum, social and emotional learning, and assessment. The final section describes physical activity, arts instruction, science, math, reading, writing, social studies, and oral language skills. Each chapter details research relating to the topic and translates it into practice. Annotation c2013 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
