The author considers several ideas about the role and status of Arab women in Muslim rural society in four hamlets in Deir al-Ghusin, Israel. Drawing on fieldwork he conducted from 1969 to 1970 and 1972 to 1974, he describes the general features of the hamlets and village; the historical background and environment, including different types of dwellings, land ownership, housing projects and new buildings, local government and institutions, education, transportation and communications, and contacts between hamlets; their economic structure, including occupations, Histadrut membership, land leases, distribution of irrigation water, water cooperatives, livestock, and occupational changes and attitudes toward the village; marriage patterns, focusing on in-group and out-group marriages and differences between reality and ideology; and women's status and role in the family and community in terms of power, ideology vs. women's views, family size, freedom of movement, involvement in decision making, selection of marriage partners, property ownership, family honor and shame, relationships within the family, conveying information, gossip, circumcision ceremonies, and the political structure, and women's definition of their role and status.
