Heartland Tobacco War chronicles the political and public relations battles between health advocates and forces supported by the tobacco industry in Oklahoma from the 1980s to the present, drawing on previously-suppressed tobacco insider documents and first-hand interviews with key players. The authors especially highlight the role of Oklahoma’s “renegade” Department of Health Commissioner, Dr. Leslie Bietsch, in the theoretical contexts of insider and outsider policy advocacy, administrative ethics, and direct democracy.
作者簡介
Michael S. Givel is associate professor of political science at The University of Oklahoma-Norman. Professor Givel’s teaching and research interests include: policy change theory, complexity theory and public policy, comparative public policy, public health policy, and tobacco policy. Professor Givel’s research and peer reviewed publications specifically focus on the evaluation of state functions, markets, corporate behavior and public policy and public administration at the local, state, federal, and international levels. This research has included examining the theoretical and applied nature of policy change and corporate or political actions particularly as it impacts tobacco policy. In 2009, Professor Givel was the first U.S. research and teaching Fulbright to Bhutan. While in Bhutan, he taught graduate classes in public administration and researched Bhutan’s unique anti-tobacco law.
Andrew L. Spivak is assistant professor in the Department of Sociology at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, where he teaches criminology, penology, demography, research methods, and statistics. A graduate of The University of Oklahoma (Ph.D., 2007), he previously worked in corrections for eight years. He is the author of Sexual Violence: Beyond the Feminist-Evolutionary Debate (2011, LFB Scholarly Publishing), and peer-reviewed articles published or forthcoming in Social Science Quarterly, Crime & Delinquency, Deviant Behavior, Justice Research and Policy, Suicide and Life-Threatening Behavior, Urban Geography, Problems of Post-Communism, the Journal of Drug Education, Politics & Policy, Public Integrity, and the International Quarterly of Community Health Education. His current research includes topics in prison recidivism, violent offending, juvenile justice processing, tobacco regulation, prostitution, and residential segregation.
