The seven articles in this collection, originally published between 1979-1988, are united around the theme of monastic friendships in the Cistercian order. McGuire's (Danish Institute for Advanced Studies in the Humanities, Copenhagen) study of the Cistercian exempla, or moral stories, particularly those of Caesarius of Heisterbach, are the source of his conclusions about Cistercian friendship.
