Wen (physics, MIT) states that the two main themes of the quantum theory of condensed matter (the band and perturbation theories, and Landau's symmetry-breaking theory and the renormalization group theory, which he collectively calls "traditional condensed matter theory") are only the beginning. He devotes the first half of this volume to his examination of the traditional condensed matter theory, and follows with his description of "modern condensed matter theories." He begins with the path integral formulation of quantum mechanics, and continues with interacting boson systems, free fermion systems, interacting fermion systems, quantum gauge theories, the theory of quantum Hall states, topological and quantum order, the main-field theory of spin liquids and quantum order, and string condensation as a unification of light and fermions.
