The volume is named for a working group within the Academy of Sciences and Humanities in Hamburg in which scientists from various disciplines such as economics, engineering science, mathematics, medicine, philosophy, physics, and sociology cooperate to analyze methodological and epistemological problems connected with using models and simulations in an interdisciplinary framework. Members present findings and grapple with unsolved problems in that area. The topics include patterns in physical and biological systems, the methodological challenges of complex systems, a unifying approach to high-level and low-level cognition, considering criteria for model modification and theory change in psychology, and climate science as a case of modeling complexity.
