商品簡介
The art of aphorism, traced to Hippocrates, has seen its ups and downs. Once popular in German literature (there were several terms for it, largely created by specific authors) it had largely fallen into obscurity by Nietzsche's time. This volume, one in the series of monographic interpretations of Nietzsche's work, is the first one in English to detail the great philosopher's aphoristic output. Several of his works were explicitly aphoristic--even as Nietzsche himself recognizes the difficulty and limitations of the form. Nietzsche's use and understanding of an aphorism changed with time, but the author argues here that a common constant throughout his aphoristic output was that of excess. Several of Nietzsche's works, including Human, All Too Human and The Gay Science are analyzed in detail and several exegetic interpretations are provided.
