書摘/試閱

The Bare House exhibition, in its turn, was opened by a speech by Kaj Nyman, professorof urban planning, in which he stated that what went wrong with architecture, besides turningsymbolic some 30000 years ago, is that technology makes it possible for humans to make mis-takes -and cover up those mistakes by making more mistakes.
His polemic speech was very strongly addressing modernist urban planning and its failureto remember that it is for people to live in that buildings are erected, not because we have atechnological ability to show off. Interesting resonance to these different critiques on the mod-ernist processes of planning and consequence can be seen in Ganzug Sedbazarin s work YouCant Cheat Sin by Flour. This old saying refers doubly to the idea of the sanctity and purif-ying powers of wheat in Mongolian Buddhism, and at the same time to the uselessness of justcovering up mistakes and hoping them to go away.
Whether wiping away and starting from a blank slate as in utopian modernist tradition orsmearing things with flour in order to get rid of the past and start anew without having to dealwith the residue of what is must be common ground for all ideals and ideals are common groundfor urban design and city planning the world over. What has formed into the focal point of myown research is reflecting on personal experience of architecture and urban planning with someambition toward a discussion or sharing of experience around what could be termed a(nti) -modernity or second or liquid modernity. These terms come from sociological thinkers such asBruno Latour, Ulrich Beck and Zygmunt Bauman all trying to formulate the idea that moderni-ty, as we have known it as a project of the Enlightenment idea of progress and evolution (ofdevelopment) , is no longer a plausible way of understanding the state of the world and us hu-mans in it.
Latour is possibly the most radical in suggesting that we actually never have been modern, that we were just caught up in an idea of modernity, never actually reaching it.
