Shortly after the 1906 earthquake and fire, the San Francisco neighborhoods west of Twin Peaks--West Portal, Forest Hill, and St. Francis Wood--were developed in accordance with a new aesthetic that called for respecting the contours of the land while providing for grand boulevards, pars, and neoclassical ornaments and considered neighborhoods of detached homes with garden and lawns as better for the health and safety of children than flats or apartments. This work documents these developments primarily through the presentation of captioned photographs, along with a few maps and other illustrations.
