The documents include journals, letters, speeches, political sermons, and other genres. The essays begin with a brief biography of the author and an explanation of the events that occasioned the composition of the document. Then they present a close reading of the primary source that develops evidence of broader themes, such as the author's rhetorical purpose, social or class position, point of view, and other relevant issues.
