Rural life is at the core of English cultural identity, and even in the hearts of the most urban one can find allegiance to the national imagery of innocent nature cavorting in the meadows and hedgerows. However, in these twelve essays we find how that identity was actually formed rather late in the English consciousness, around the time of parliamentary enclosure of the open fields, making the rural life of literature primarily a hazily-recalled memory or even a fantasy. Those unfamiliar with the reality were spoon-fed a more palatable and patriotic alternative, and many of those who supplied or augmented this national imagery preferred to keep the rural in the abstract in their lives and work.
