商品簡介
Edna O'Brien published her first novel, The Country Girls in 1960, later going on to win the 1995 European Prize for Literature and other awards. However, according to Colleta (English, Babson College, US) and O'Connor (English, National U. of Ireland) she has been under-regarded by scholars and is overdue for critical reevaluation. They present these seven papers as a means of jump- starting the scholarly reevaluation. Collectively, the contributions explore O'Brien's critique of Irish and Catholic forms of patriarchy, her implicit attacks on James Joyce's vision of women's sexual and social roles, her construction of Ireland as victimized mother and its relation to the cult of the Virgin Mary, her violations of patriarchal conventions of textual production, and her transgressive revisioning of the genre of historical novels, among other topics.
