Arguing that the contributions of women to education in the progressive era South has been under appreciated because of their geographical and racial heterogeneity, Reynolds and Schramm (both of the College of Education at the U. of South Carolina) present the life histories of a number of women in southern education from 1890 to 1930 in order to encourage an understanding of them as a collective entity (a "separate sisterhood"). They identify women urging reform in collegiate institutions, vocational schools, and state or regional systems and describe their particular contributions. Annotation c.
