Kathryn I. Bel Monte has been a freelance writer for twenty years for publications including Essence Magazine and the Miami Times. She has produced historical and educational documentaries for television. Her great-great-grandfather was a slave who fought for his freedom as a Civil War soldier and is a featured hero. Bel Monte received her master’s in education from Florida Atlantic University.
