Both grammatical and inferential theories of the nature of illocution pose important difficulties, says Campo Martinez, and argues that adopting a cognitive framework endows researchers with a whole new range of analytical tools for bypassing the shortcomings of traditional theories of speech acts. She explains that cognitive linguistics allow semanticists to discuss illocution as the result of performing cognitive operations supporting inferential schemas that apply to cognitive models of a situational kind. Then she applies the approach to a number of kinds of speech acts, among them ordering, advising, threatening congratulating, apologizing, and condoling.
