Francesconi examines linguistic, textual, and discursive dynamics enacted by tourism and travel texts, a genre she chose because tourism pervades contemporary society. Just as tourism cannot be neglected as frivolous recreational activity, she declares, tourism texts cannot be snobbishly condemned as superficial, but deserve critical attention and scientific investigation. Using tools of applied linguistics and English for specific purposes, she discusses genre analysis, systemic functional grammar, visual analysis, aural analysis, and multimodal and intermodal analysis.
