Enhancing Self-directed Vocabulary Learning ― Research and Practice

This work outlines some new approaches to facilitate self-directed vocabulary learning (SDVL). These are primarily the strategy-based constructivist approach (SBCA) and the use of computer-assisted language learning (CALL). The SBCA rests on the theory that the most effective way of mastering new material is through active learning, where students build their own cognitive representations. This is greatly supported by the use of CALL. Along with thorough exploration of vocabulary learning through SBCA, this book pays attention to the development of language courseware. The seventh chapter goes on to provide information on a courseware prototype recently developed called Learning Vocabulary in Domain which will be tested in China. Jing Wu is a lecturer in the College of Foreign Languages and Literatures at Fudan University in China. She received her PhD degree in Linguistics from City University of Hong Kong. Her research interests include computer-assisted language learning (CALL), EFL learning and teaching, vocabulary acquisition and self-directed learning.
