Electrical safety is a neglected area of electrical power engineering, often relegated to mandatory safety training courses and routine safety meetings. Designed to provide a high-level introduction to electrical engineers who need to know about electrical safety, this book examines the electrical fundamentals of resistance, inductance, and capacitance as applied to the human body, followed by an analysis of the effects of current on the human body. Safety in substation grounding, particularly step and touch potentials; the multi-grounded distribution system; and the effect of ground return currents are also discussed.

Peter E. Sutherland serves as lead consultant at GE Energy Services, in Schenectady, New York. He has a PhD in Electric Power Engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. He is a well-respected industry expert who has taught several courses on the topic. He is a fellow of IEEE.
