Taiwan in Transformation ― The Challenge of a New Democracy to an Old Civilization

Huang has revised his original nine essays and added two more. One of them describes the experiences of Mainland Chinese visitors to Taiwan in the early years after World War II as an inspiration for cross-strait interaction during the 21st century. The other new chapter deals with the awakening of individuality after the 1987 lifting of martial law, and the resulting tension between egocentrism and Confucian values. Other topics include the Taiwanese nostalgia for cultural China 1895-1950, the transformation of Confucianism 1950-80, and mutual historical understanding as the basis for Taiwan-Mainland relations in the 21st century.
