Meibauer presents a new approach to lying in this linguistic study, viewing it as an act that comprises deliberately false implicatures and presuppositions. He notes that, in general, we do not like lying very much, but accept it and find it useful for practical purposes. He argues throughout that this flexibility has not only to do with well-known moral issues, but also with matters of how our language works. Pursuing a double strategy, he analyzes lying by situating it within the broader debate in the semantics-pragmatics interface and shows how this debate may profit from a study of a “big” issue like lying.
