Partee (English, U. of Utah) explores Shakespeare's portrayal both of children themselves, and of the attitudes of adults towards them. He finds the children to be fully developed, if minor, characters in several cases. Generally parents tend to gush over helpless infants, he says, but often react with rage when older children challenge their authority. All this he places in the context of nuclear families beginning to replace extended families in Elizabethan England. Annotation c2007 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
