Advanced Safety Management ─ Focusing on Z10 and Serious Injury Prevention

The 2nd Edition of Advanced Safety Management addresses the extensive changes made in the new version of the Z10-2012 standard. The new edition updates extensively nearly all of the chapters in the existing edition. A key change in the Z10-2012 standard deals with improving serious injury and fatality prevention, about five new chapters are written to cover this new emphasis. The 2nd edition of Advance Safety Management also explains how the revised Z10-2012 is in alignment with standards issued by the International Organization for Standardization on quality and environmental management. It gives guidance on the systems approach to safety that Z10-2012 now emphasized, and how to conduct risk assessments, which now must be done under Z10-2012.

The new edition of Advance System Safety also explains new training requirements now specially stated in the Z10-2012. The 2nd edition explains how Z10-2012 emphasizes that safety system have to be continually changed and updated to reflect real world conditions. The 2nd edition incorporates all this new information by revising existing chapters and by adding new chapters on: Macro Thinking -- The Socio-Technical Model, Prevention through Design: Hazard Analysis and Risk Assessment, Introduction to System Safety, Safety Professionals as Culture Change Agent.

FRED A. MANUELE, CSP, PE, is President of Hazards Limited, the company he founded after retiring from Marsh & McLennan where he served as managing director. His books Advanced Safety Management: Focusing on Z10 and Serious Injury Prevention and On the Practice of Safety have been widely adopted for graduate and undergraduate safety degree programs. Mr. Manuele is a Fellow of the American Society of Safety Engineers and a recipient of the National Safety Council's Distinguished Service to Safety Award. In 2013, he was given a Lifetime Achievement Award by the Board of Certified Safety Professionals. Mr. Manuele also served as chair for the development of the new American National Standard on Prevention through Design.
