Clinical Laboratory Management

This large volume, edited by Garcia (Editor in Chief), Bachner, Baselski, Lewis, Linscott, et al., is intended to be a comprehensive reference for all types of laboratories, medical as well as commercial. There are 11 sections and 55 chapters. The first is an introduction to concepts relevant in management, finances, and also addresses dealing with regulatory requirements. The next three sections elaborate to a great degree on the concepts in management introduced in the first section. These topics include leadership, managing personnel, and the requirements of effective laboratory management. The next four sections are devoted to the various financial aspects of laboratory management such as generating revenue, assessing profitability, reimbursement, marketing, and expansion. Sections 9 and 10 cover evidence-based medicine, and defining and quantifying success. The final section is a look at the future of clinical laboratories and looks into trends in pathology, regulations, electronic health records, laboratory instrumentation, and laboratory practice. There is a large glossary of terms at the back. There are also a small number of color plates in the chapter on lab safety. These show images of common laboratory shipping containers and paper forms.
