Although trained in surgery and medicine, Menzies' love was botany, and he served as naturalist and ship's surgeon with the Vancouver expedition of 200 years ago, which had as its missions the taking of Friendly Cove in Nootka Sound from the Spanish and the search for the legendary Northwest Passage.
