Practitioners of Commedia dell'arte , which significantly shaped European theater between the late 16th and end of the 18th centuries, used plot outlines, called scenari rather than written scripts. The anthology doubles the number of scenari available to modern scholars by presenting the 176 legible ones in the collection of D. Annibale Sersale, Conte di Casamarciano, assembled in two volumes about 1700. The first volume is in English, the second in Italian. Supporting material in the first volume includes an introduction and some translation points, a table of concordances, English summaries of the introductory chapters to the Italian edition, and indexes of English titles and characters.
