The entries briefly describe the writer's life and career, then focus on his or her best known works, with discussion of plot, character, and storyline as well as style, reception, and influence. Entries also include a list of the writer's works, secondary literature, and a list of references, including the location of primary sources. Notable are the lengthy introduction describing the writing scene of the time, and the appendices, which discuss poetry, music, theatre, spectacle, and the Arcadian Academy.
