The author aims to construct a non-Eurocentric critical theory based on non-Western epistemic foundations that valorize non-Eurocentric conceptions of emancipation and liberation and proposes counterhegemonic understandings of such concepts as human rights, the rule of law, democracy, and socialism. In the first part of the book, he analyzes the complexities of Western modernity and considers whether a "non-Occidental West is possible." In the second part, he constructs an "epistemology of the South" through a variety of perspectives, touching upon such topics as social exclusion, the ways in which dominant modern forms of reason neglect vast amounts of social experience from the Global South, and the possibilities for intercultural translation of epistemologies of the South.
