Raposa (religion, Lehigh U.) explores the notion of "acedia," what Christian theologians define as boredom with the rituals of spiritual devotion, and how this boredom plays a dual, but powerful, role in spiritual life. Using writings from Eastern and Western religious traditions, he relates the ways that this normal stage in a person's spiritual journey can evolve into a rebirth of religious knowledge if understood properly. He uses several accounts of the "dark night," through which most spiritual mystics have passed to achieve their stunning connections to their God, to highlight how the experience of boredom can be the "pallid half- darkness that lingers just before the dawning of religious insight."
