Culinary Verbs in Middle English

Bator knows of no extensive semantic analysis of Middle English culinary language, so bases her work exclusively on available editions of manuscripts containing Middle English culinary recipes. The earliest such material comes from the end of the 13th century, and is rather scarce, she says, so she concentrates on the period of the late Middle Ages--the 14th and 15th centuries--from which she could assemble a representative sample of recipes. She analyzes verbs in the categories of medieval food and drink, verbs of cutting, verbs of cooking, and verbs of preparing.
