Guo (history, U. of Hawai'i-Manoa) explores the intersection of a particular expression of popular culture in a particular place during a particular period. The genre is a religious drama depicting the journey of the Buddhist monk Mulian through the underworld to rescue his sinful mother. The place is a Jiangnan prefecture famed since the 16th century for its Confucian gentry society, strong practice of kinship organization, and far-reaching mercantile influence.
