Operational Risk Management in Container Terminals

This book provides an overview of the operation of container terminals and the associated risks with such operations. These risks are often ignored or not properly investigated by both scholars and practitioners.

Operational Risk Management in Container Terminals explores and discusses the decision rationales and the consequences for these operational risks handling process, with in-depth investigation on the container terminals in the Asia-Pacific region. The topics covered include the history and development of the container terminals, the operation of the terminals and risk incurred, the risk-management theories and concepts, rationales and consequences of the risk decisions in the container terminal operations, common practices and recommendations on terminal operational risk handling.

Eric Su is currently the General Manager – Engineering of Hongkong International Terminals. Mr. Su has more than twenty years of container terminal experience in both Hong Kong and Mainland China, including Shanghai, Suzhou and Shenzhen.

Mr. Su graduated from the University of Hong Kong in the late 80’s. He is a Fellow of the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers, a Member of the Institution of Civil Engineers and a Member of the Institution of Structural Engineers. He holds an EMBA degree with City University of Hong Kong and is studying DBA in the same university.

Edward Tang is currently the General Manager – Operations of Hongkong International Terminals. Starting his career as a Pier Supervisor, Mr. Tang has more than 35 years of experience in container terminal industry. Apart from Hong Kong, Mr. Tang has been the senior executive for various major container terminals in Mainland China, including Shanghai, Ningbo, Shantou, Xiamen and Shenzhen.

Starting from almost entirely scratch, Mr. Tang and his team created HIT’s yard planning system and improved substantially the terminal efficiency through streamlining various operations process. He was also one of the pioneers in setting up the terminal operating systems and establishing the operations procedures for Shanghai port.

Kin Keung Lai received his PhD at Michigan State University, USA. He is currently the Chair Professor of Management Science at the City University of Hong Kong. He is also the Director of the Invesco-Great Wall Research Unit on Risk Analysis and Business Intelligence (RABI) at the College of Business. Prior to his current post, he was a Senior Operational Research Analyst for Cathay Pacific Airways and an Area Manager on Marketing Information Systems for Union Carbide Eastern.

Crystal Lee is currently a PhD student of the Department of Management Sciences in the City University of Hong Kong. Before perusing her PhD study, she has been an Assistant Lecturer in which she was responsible for conducting courses in Transport, Logistics & Supply Chain Management. She has received extensive trainings in this field with her undergraduate study in Management Science and master degree in Transport Policy and Planning.

Miss Lee main research areas are transport, logistics and support chain management in risk context and financial & business risk analysis. She has published a number of conference papers in these contexts which include the risk responses/decisions rationales in container terminal operation.
