Flannery-Dailey (religion, Hendrix College) explores revelatory dreams in early Judaism, or Hellenistic Judaism, between the Persian period and the late Roman empire. She examines diverse texts containing dreams in the Hebrew Bible, Apocrypha, Pseudepigrapha, Dead Sea Scrolls, and Josephus. She also considers some early Christian texts, either because a good argument can be made that they are derived from earlier Jewish texts or because they relate in significant ways to a Hellenistic Jewish context before the end of the first century. The belief that such dreams are genuine contacts with the divine and endow the dreamer with knowledge, healing, or divine sanction she finds to cross cultural and religious boundaries. Frances Flannery-Dailey, Ph.D. (2000) in Religion, The University of Iowa, is Assistant Professor of Religion at Hendrix College. This is her first monograph.
