Geyer begins with a revised version of his 1986 article Mythology and Culture in the Oracles against the Nations, published in Vestus Testamentum. Then he explores three myths that are incorporated within the body of the Hebrew text, examines the Day of Yahweh, and concludes that the Lament passages are of particular significance for interpreting the oracles. He argues that the oracles show close connection with creation mythology that was widespread in the ancient Near East and played a major role in worship in the temple in Jerusalem during the monarchy, but also owe much of their origin to a much more ancient source, known principally as the Sumerian psalms of lamentation.
