Towards an International Law of Co-progressiveness ― Membership, Leadership and Responsibility

Yee presents readers with an exploration of membership, leadership, and responsibility in the international system, and how these concepts inform and reflect on international law. The author has organized the main body of his text in eighteen chapters divided into three parts. The first part covers the concept of membership in the international system, with chapters on language in the Statutes of the International Court of Justice, the Kosovo advisory opinion, the international law of co-progressiveness and co-progressiveness of civilizations, and other related subjects. The second part covers the concept of leadership in the international system, with chapters on the sovereign equality of states and the legitimacy of leader states, and other related subjects. The final section is focused on the responsibility of nation states in the international system. Sienho Yee is Changjiang Xuezhe Professor and Chief Expert at the Wuhan University China Institute of Boundary and Ocean Studies and Institute of International Law; a member of the Institut de droit international; and Editor-in-Chief of the Chinese Journal of International Law (Oxford University Press). He holds a J.D. from Columbia Law School. A generalist on the international legal system and ICJ jurisprudence, he has lectured at The Hague Academy onjus cogens, at Xiamen on UNCLOS, Part XV, and at Thessaloniki on State responsibility. He has also acted as an adviser to governments on international dispute settlement.
