This comprehensive and in-depth study on the understanding and interpretation of a child's right to survival and development provides a compact assessment of Article 6(2) of the Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) in light of its drafting history, the reports of the Committee on the Rights of the Child, and other relevant sources appropriate to the discipline of international human rights law. The book analyzes the travaux preparatoires of the CRC and the academic work of some of its drafters. It includes an interview with one of the drafters and explores the literature of the Committee on the Rights of the Child with respect to Article 6(2) and how its understanding and interpretations of this Article have developed over time. The book also examines the weaknesses and strengths in relation to the observations it has made, and it explores the legal effects of the Committee's classifications making suggestions for others as well. Importantly, it discusses the relationship between the right of the child to survival and development and his/her dignity, and it provides an understanding of the child's physical, mental, spiritual, moral, and cognitive development. In addition, the book discusses various State obligations aimed at the enjoyment of the right to survival and development. The book explains the connection between the right to development and the economic and social rights of the child on the one hand, and the right of the child to survival and development on the other hand. Moreover, it introduces the concept of comprehensiveness and individuality of the right of the child, and it fundamentally argues that there is still more to add to the understanding and interpretations of Article 6(2) of the CRC. Khadeija is an Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Law, University of Khartoum where she is involved in teaching and research. She received her Bachelor degree in Law (LLB) with Second Class Honours (Division I) from the Faculty of Law - University of Khartoum where she also completed her LLM degree with her thesis focusing on Children's Rights. Later, she obtained a post-graduate Diploma on International Law and Organization for Development from the Institute of Social Studies (ISS), The Hague- Netherlands. Khadeija obtained her PhD in Human Rights from the Irish Centre for Human Rights, National University of Ireland (Galway).She is actively involved in teaching of undergraduate and postgraduate students. She was also the Secretary to the Research Counsel and Coordinator for the Postgraduate Studies at the Faculty of Law, University of Khartoum- Sudan.She made significant and original contributions aiming to advance children's rights in international and national forums through several academic and public activities including academic publications. Some of her publications, focus on children' rights and State constitution, children's rights and armed conflict, children's rights and drugs, and children's rights and youth unemployment. Her research interests include human rights, more specifically her work examines children's rights. She is also interested in human rights and Islam, human rights and development, Jurisprudence, Public International Law and Private International Law.She was recently elected as a Senior Researcher in a collaborative project between the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and the Faculty of Law- University of Khartoum. The project studied Nationality and Risk of Statelessness after the Secession of South Sudan. She is a member of the Founding Committee of the Human Rights Centre at the Faculty of Law, University of Khartoum.
