In order to show how linguists can use cluster analysis--which is used to generate hypotheses in a broad range of sciences--for corpus-based hypothesis generation in linguistics, Moisl applies it to a case study of an dialect corpus, the Diachronic Electronic Corpus of Tyneside English. He seeks to contribute to the development of an empirically-based quantitative methodology for generating hypotheses in the linguistics community.
