A Staggering Revolution ─ A Cultural History of Thirties Photography

Going beyond the well-known photographs produced in the 1930s under the aegis of the Farm Security Administration, the celebrated works of Alfred Stieglitz, and the photographs displayed by the Museum of Modern Art, Raeburn (American studies and English, U. of Iowa) has found that 1930s was an era in which a large group of "middlemen and women" were developing new avenues of bringing their photographs to the public, resulting in what can aptly be characterized as a photographic renaissance. In describing this renaissance, he highlights the works and activities of these previously neglected photographers and pays particular attention to the building of institutions that became the sites of interactions between the world of photography and the wider public.
