Media Literacy Is Elementary ― Teaching Youth to Critically Read and Create Media

Author Jeff Share is affiliated with the Teacher Education Program at UCLA’s Graduate School of Education and Information Studies. In this book covering both practice and theory of critical media literacy, he outlines core concepts of critical media literacy and describes different approaches to it for elementary students. Voices of real teachers are included, along with about 10 pages of appendices offering guidelines for creating media literacy materials for the classroom. The book can be used for courses in education and teacher preparation; its discussion of cultural studies and media education will interest students in communications. This second edition contains black and white photos, plus two new chapters on using photography in the classroom and an exemplary university course on critical media literacy for pre-service teachers. Jeff Share earned his PhD in the Graduate School of Education and Information Studies at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) where he currently works as a Faculty Advisor in the Teacher Education Program. His research focuses on theoretical frameworks and practical applications for teaching critical media literacy.
