Transnational South America ─ Experiences, Ideas, and Identities, 1860s-1900s

This book examines the circulation of men and ideas across state boundaries within South America and the interrelated proliferation of macro-regional, cultural-political projects during the late-19th and early-20th centuries. It reconstructs this largely overlooked trend toward connectedness both as an objective process and as an assemblage of visions and policies concentrating on diverse practices such as translation, intertextuality, travel, cultural diplomacy, international conferences, printed press, institutional and personal contacts. Highlighting the importance of transnational intercrossings within the South American continent, the book thus offers a correction to two major traditions in the historiography of ideas and identities in modern Latin America: the predominance of the nation-state as the main unit of analysis, and the concentration on relationships with Europe and the U.S. as the main axis of cultural exchange.
