Political participation is on the decline across industrialised Western democracies, not least amongst the younger generations, and this has led to concerns that governments lack legitimacy and mandates, furthering the crisis of democratic accountability.
This book provides a rigorously researched empirical analysis of political participation trends across generations in Western Europe to provide conclusions on the extent to which we should be concerned about this fundamental problem for contemporary democracies. It examines the way in which the political behaviour of younger generations leads to social change. The book is also about exploring whether younger generations are in effect as disengaged they are often made out to be. Or rather, do they just participate in politics in a different way to previous generations? It shows that younger generations retain pronounced political opinions but they are less likely to see collective political participation as a means to solve social problems and choose to participate differently.
The book is of key interest to scholars, students and practitioners of political sociology, political participation and behaviour, European politics, comparative politics, and democratization studies.
