Jones was a Maryland journalist and novelist who went south at the outbreak of the Civil War and spent four years as a senior clerk in the Confederate War Department. His very detailed chronicle--published in two volumes in 1866--was the first personal narrative of consequence to appear after the war, and remains among the top dozen printed sources on the Southern nation and its government, military affairs, politics, society, economics, and fluctuating morale. He never left the capital city of Richmond, Virginia and describes daily life during wartime, and his position as a high-level clerk at the center of military planning gave him access to confidential files and command-level conversations that leaked regularly into his diary.
