商品簡介
As a political, social and cultural entity, Norway changed much in the twentieth century. It became independent from Sweden less than a century before to produced national heroes such as Amundson. It developed a new Norwegian language based on Old Norse and the talk of the rural people, a language that competed with the "book Norwegian" with its Danish influences and Sami, the indigenous language. It developed new markets and industrial technologies and a sophisticated workers' movement. It suffered invasion by German nazis and endured Quisling. The influx of immigrants and the rise of new generations of writers created a literary diversity the culture had to work to accept. Here, Thresher (U. of Wisconsin) and contributors examine the lives and works of over 35 writers who represent these and other phases of development in Norwegian literature ranging from those working within the three languages at the turn of the century, through the forces of politics and societal change, to the new voices of the last years of the century. They include the differing approaches of Hamsun and Kinck to the individual, the international in Sandel and Vesaas, the call for resistance from Overland and Hagerup, and the rising feminism of Vik and Wassmo. The editor includes a checklist of further readings and a comprehensive index. Annotation c2004 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
