Citizenship and Its Others

This edited volume analyzes citizenship through attention to its Others, bringing together research on the exclusion of migrants, welfare claimants, women, children and others. By defining citizenship as legal status, political belonging, and membership rights, it reveals the partiality of citizenship's inclusion and claims to equality. It also explores the significance of citizenship talk, and of migration and citizenship policy and practice to citizens. Opening with an examination of the 'Good Citizen', each subsequent chapter examines one manifestation of a Citizenship's Other, ending with a consideration of what this means for the politics of citizenship. The effect is to bring established and emerging scholars into conversation on one of the burning issues of our time.

Bridget Anderson is Professor of Migration and Citizenship and Research Director at the Centre on Migration, Policy and Society, University of Oxford, UK. Her research interests include citizenship, nationalism, immigration enforcement (including 'trafficking'), deportation, legal status, low waged labour and migration and the state. Her publications include Us and Them: the Dangerous Politics of Immigration Controls (2013), Doing the Dirty Work? The Global Politics of Domestic Labour (2000). She has also co-edited Migration and Care Labour (Palgrave Macmillan, 2014, with Isabel Shutes), and Who Needs Migrant Workers? Labour Shortages, Immigration and Public Policy (2010, with Martin Ruhs).

Vanessa Hughes is a Doctoral Candidate in Sociology at Goldsmiths, University of London, UK. Her research interests include citizenship, diversity, education, migrant children and families, legal status, everyday multiculturalism and the life course. Her publications include Narrating 'Home' (2013) and No Way Out, No Way In: Irregular Migrant Children and Families in the UK (2012).
