The question of how best to deal with sex offenders in the community is of increasing political and public interest. Securing the protection of the public has become the predominant issue for policy makers and criminal justice practitioners, focusing attention on a small group of dangerous offenders deemed to present the highest risk of harm to the public. However, the agencies charged with the task of managing sex offenders in the community have responsibility for a far wider range of offenders and management strategies than such a focus implies.
The aim of this book is to provide a counterweight to the narrow, risk-focused agenda that has dominated discussions of this issue. It brings together senior academics, policy makers and practitioners in order to assess current and future issues in a variety of areas: theory; the legal and political context; balancing the rights of victims and offenders; risk assessment and management; treatment strategies; multi-agency public protection arrangements; and law enforcement.
Sex Offenders in the Community: managing and reducing the risks will be essential reading for policy makers, those working in agencies with responsibility for sex offenders, undergraduate and postgraduate students of criminology, psychology and sociology and anyone seeking to develop an informed position on this complex and controversial issue.
