The Handbook of Communication in Cross-Cultural Perspective

Bringing together researchers from around the world, this Handbook provides unique examinations of communication in cross-cultural perspective. The studies herein explore the diverse ways in which communication is understood around the world; examine specifically cultural traditions in the study of communication; and highlight the range of ways communication is understood. TheHandbook contributors present communication as an academic discipline and as a culturally situated practice. Designed at the nexus of various intellectual traditions such as the ethnography of communication, linguistic ethnography, cultural approaches to discourse, and kindred approaches, the handbook employs a general approach which, when used, understands communication in its particular cultural communities, that is, as it is conceived and evaluated by people in specific discursive practices and events.
