Early Periodical Indexes ― Bibliographies and Indexes of Literature Published in Periodicals Before 1900

Lists and describes publications that provide some form of access to periodical articles published before 1900. Most publications cited are subject bibliographies which list articles, dissertations, government publications, and other materials. Other publications cited are indexes to periodicals, and electronic sources such as CD-ROMs and Internet sites. Materials cited were published between 1790 and 1999. Annotations address dates of coverage, completeness, and ease with which a source can be used in the library context. Entries are grouped in sections on general subjects, humanities, history and area studies, social and behavioral sciences, science and technology, and library and information science. Robert Balay(B.A. Macalester College, St. Paul, Minn.; M.A., University of Minnesota; M.S.L.S., Columbia University) has been Reference Editor at Choice magazine for the past fifteen years, but is now semi-retired. He edited the eleventh edition of the esteemed Guide to Reference Books, as well as the supplement to the tenth edition. He was Head of Reference, Yale University Libraries, from 1968 through 1985.
