Reem Bassiouney is associate professor of linguistics at the American University in Cairo. A regular contributor to the Egyptian literary weeklyAkhbar al-adab, she is the author of several novels, including The Pistachio Sellerand Professor Hanaa, and of numerous scholarly works, her most recent beingLanguage and Identity in Modern Egypt.
Melanie Magidow, with a PhD in Middle Eastern Languages and Cultures from the University of Texas at Austin, is an Arabic language instructor at the University of Rhode Island.
