Since its creation, the African Union (AU) has had to tackle a wide range of issues, from health epidemics and civil wars to poverty and desertification. It has led military interventions in Burundi, Sudan, and Somalia and adopted key legislation to prevent corruption and promote development and democracy. The book examines the AU's performance, role, and the innovative and homegrown solutions it has developed. Going beyond the traditional security-centric discussion, it analyzes other equally important issues that the AU has dealt with, such as human rights, and conceptualizes the AU as a three dimensional international organization, with intergovernmental, supranational, and transnational dimensions.
