The Fandaanano faith remained current among the Hadiyya people of southern Ethiopia through the 1970s, but had died out as a functioning socio-religious system before the late 1990s. Braukamper's fieldwork spanned that period: from when most people had converted to world religions but knowledge of Fandaanano was common, to when only a few elders remembered the old ways in romantic nostalgia.
